"It is a great priviledge and honour to be given the opportunity to serve on a such an important organization,"said newly appointed chairperson of the board of the Fiji Audio Visual Commission, Sharon Smith-Johns.

Ms Smith-Johns who is the Chief Executive Officer of Connect Internet Services (a subsidiary of Telecoms Fili Ltd) was appointed by Minister for Industry, Tourism, Trade and Communications, Tom Ricketts, effective from May 2, 2008, for a period of two years.

Appointed with her for the same tenure is a newly constituted board consisting of Chris Caine (sitting member); Yaminiasi Gaunavou (sitting member); and statutory members including Permanent Secretary for Finance and National Planning; Permanent Secretary for Education, National Heritage and Culture; Permanent Secretary for Industry, Tourism, Trade and Communications; and Deputy Secretary for Communications.

"The audiovisual industry is an exciting new industry with lots of potential and my fellow board members and I will provide the perspective and direction that will guide the FAVC on a path to greater success,"Ms Smith-Johns said.

She said the FAVC is a small but remarkable organization and with the right level of support and resources, can become a real alternative industry for Fiji.

"For the six years to 2007, the FAVC generated $351 million of new business which resulted in 7,600 new full-time equivalent jobs. Considering that Government only invested $7.05 million worth of grants in the commission during this time, it represents an excellent return on investment for the nation,"she said.

Ms Smith-Johns said that in 2006 alone, the FAVC generated $179 million of new business, which clearly showed what potential out there was.

"One of the things we want to do is to launch the new vision, logo, and website of the FAVC. We will do this on Friday next week,"she said.

"The new vision is bold and forward-looking and gives everyone a clear idea of the direction in which the FAVC wishes to move,"she said.

She said the FAVC will be organizing several events in the near future which will help promote the industry and raise awareness, and also help towards infrastructure developments.

In welcoming the appointments, the Chief Executive Officer of the FAVC, Taniela Bolea, said he welcomed the appointment of the new board as the commission can now move forward with confidence.

"The new board brings a lot of experience and expertise to the table and I look forward to the members' guidance and support to help drive the commission to greater heights," Mr Bolea said.
