2011 Tuckers Ice Cream Dance Competition
Tuckers Ice Cream is once again the premiere sponsor of the annual dance competition that FAVC organizes alongside the Kula Film Awards. With the level of support provided, the sponsor secures the naming rights of the competition - so as was the case last year, the dance competition is called the 2011 TUCKERS ICE-CREAM DANCE COMPETITION. A dance competition such as this allows artists to show and compare their skills with other dancers at a similar level.
The FAVC continues to host this event because we know that there is a lot of latent talent in our youths in the area of cultural arts and an avenue had to be found to draw this out. Dance and music are important facets of the entertainment industry and talent in these fileds must be encouraged so that our talented young people can consider these areas for a career path.
This is the 6th year of the competition and it is held in a new format. This year's competition will feature FIJIWOOD - a fusion of dances which truly refelct Fiji's multiracial and multiethnic cosiety and the harmony of song and dance therein. The performances that will be presented this year are expected to capture the essence of different dance genre, common to Fiji. This is done also to take the performances to a new level.
There is abundance of talent amongst our young people and we're challenging them through the revised format to create something new and different - something unique. Once they are able to do this, they will be able to access the many opportunities in the entertainment industry anywhere in the world. With the change this year, the public will see performances which will be a medley of dance and music that showcase the mixed cultural heritage of Fiji.
To assist students in their preparations for stage performance, the FAVC will facilitate workshops for all participants. These workshops will be conducted by professionals from USP's Oceania Center for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies.
25 schools from around Fiji are taking part in the competition.
