Cabinet Approves Fiji Islands Audio-Visual Commission (Amendment) Decree 2011

Cabinet has approved the Fiji Islands Audio Visual Commission (Amendment) Decree 2011.

The decree amends the Fiji Islands Audio –Visual Commission Act to vary the membership of the Fiji Audio Visual Commission (FAVC) Board.

The decision was reached through a submission by the Attorney General and Minister for Industry and Trade, Mr Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum.

The FAVC Act established the FAVC for the purpose of developing and promoting the audio-visual industry in Fiji.

The Attorney General said the current membership structure of the FAVC Board was no longer effective in meeting the challenges of developing the audio-visual industry in Fiji.

“There is therefore an urgent need to revise the membership structure of the FAVC Board with a view to finding an appropriate balance for suitable FAVC Board members,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

He also said that the FAVC was an entity involved in business decision and thus required increased involvement of the private sector and commitment to develop the audio-visual industry.

Under the Amendment Decree, Section 4 (1) of the FAVC Act is amended to allow the minister to appoint members without restriction to certain sectors or government agencies.
Section 7(2) of the FAVC Act is also amended to reflect a quorum of three members at a meeting of the board.
