Suva, July 15 2011 – Participants from around the country are all geared up for the annual Dance Competition organized by the Fiji Audio Visual Commission as part of the Kula Film Awards and sponsored by Tucker’s Ice Cream.
Commenting on this, FAVC’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Florence Swamy said, “The performances that will be presented this year are expected to capture the essence of different dance genre, common to Fiji”. She added that this is done also to take the performances to a new level. “There is an abundance of talent amongst our young people and we’re challenging them through the revised competition format to create something new and different – something unique and once they’re able to do this, they’ll be able to access the many opportunities in the entertainment industry anywhere in the world”, said Ms Swamy.
With the change this year, the public will see performances featuring e a medley of dance and music that showcase the mixed cultural heritage of Fiji. Ms. Swamy also added that a dance competition such as the TUCKERS ICE-CREAM DANCE COMPETITION allows artists to showcase and compare their skills with other dancers at a similar level. She said that the FAVC continues to host this event because there is a lot of latent talent in our youths in the area of cultural arts and an avenue had to be found to draw this out. She further added that dance and music are important facets of the entertainment industry and talent in these fields must be encouraged so that our talented young people school leavers can consider these areas for a career path.
