Kula Film Awards


The Kula Film Awards is an initiative by the Fiji Audio Visual Commission which started in 2006. It is an annual event and this year will be the 6th. This event continues to grow as it targets young people to simulate their interest in the creative arts and thereby urging them to seriously consider the many opportunities available in the audio visual sector as a career. The film and dance competitions will act as the platform to ignite the untapped potential of future filmamkers and other creative talents of Fiji's young people.


Sponsors for this year's event include Fiji National University, Vodafone Fiji, Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), and Fiji Audio Visual Commission (FAVC).Other supporting sponsors include Art & Soul, Damodar Village 6 Cinemas, Fiji TV, Fiji Sun, Frezco Beverages, Magnum Productions,Ministry of Education, Pasifika Communication, Skylite Productions, Moving Pictures, Department of Heritage & Culture, University of the South Pacific (USP), Oceania Dance & Theatre, Ministry of Information Film & TV Unit, Pacific Sun, South Pacific Recordings, Secretariat of the Pacific Community, Tappoo, Gibson Freight, Tau Sport and Aria Tea Productions Ltd.

With the assistance of the Ministry of Education, the FAVC contacted over 300 secondary schools from all over Fiji to encourage their students to take part in both the film and dance competition. The film competition includes amateur filmmakers who will compete in the Open Category and this is sponsored by Continental Airline and supported by Williams & Goslings. Represenatives of the local audio-visual industry will provide technical assistance to all participants in areas such as film editing, etc.

Awards will be presented for the FNU Best Actress, FNU Best Actor, Vodafone Best Director, FBC Best Original Music, FAVC Best Script, FAVC Most Popular Film and FAVC Best Film. An independent panel of judges looks at all the entires and decides the winners in the different categories except the 'Most Popular Film' which is determined by public voting through texting of school's initials to 828.

For the first time, there are entries from the Pacific Region with 5 schools from Tonga showing their interest in the competition.

This year, the dance competition will have a new format named "FIJIWOOD" which is a medley of the different dance genres. This competition is sponsored by Tuckers Ice Cream and will be called the "Tuckers Ice Cream Dance Competition. Awards will be presented for the first, second and third place as well as "Most Entertaining Group" and Best Female and Male Dancer.
